Field Trip Programs focus on reinforcing classroom curriculum through hands-on lessons and educational experiences. Each program offered may be modified to suit the needs of the attending teachers and students. Wolfe's Neck Farm hosts Pre-K through High School Students with each lesson scaled appropriately to your student's level.
Spring Field Trip Programs Include:
The Lifecycle of Our Foods (PreK-12)
Students learn hands-on how time and the seasons affect our food production by investigating natural cycles on the farm. From seed to plate, students get to travel with food all the way to their mouths.
Maine's Rocky Shore (PreK-12)
Students investigate our tide pools and ancient rocky coast, learning about the flora and fauna which thrive in these natural communities. Teachers may also choose to incorporate an comparison with our salt marsh as part of this lesson.
Barns and Pastures (PreK-12)
Our most popular Spring program. Students engage in chores in order to learn about the animals (including babies!) in our barn and pastures to better understand basic needs.
Wonderful Wool (PreK-12)
An up-close meeting with our sheep and their wool allows students to examine the fine fiber and learn why it is so useful. Students process the wool to make their own yarn or felt.
Seeds and Soil (PreK-12)
Students examine and dissect both seeds and soil to learn about their working parts and functions.
Maine Forests (2-12)
This lesson explores many of the natural relationships and cycles found in the Maine forests. Students look at the forest as a working system and then at each of its working parts.
Farm Machinery (3-12)
Simple physics of farm machinery with working demonstrations of equipment make this lesson fun and educational for all students. Learning outcomes for this lesson include understanding simple machines.
Woodlot Management (4-12)
Students learn mathematical techniques and s well as tools used by foresters to determine the "value" of a forest, then investigate other forms of value that a forester considers when selecting trees for harvest.
Sustainable Agriculture (5-12)
Students learn the basic principles of farming with future generations in mind. An experiential tour of the farm allows students to learn about rotational grazing, nutrient management, resource conservation and more.
A Few Details about the Trips:
Trips cost $6 per student, minimum 15 students. (Note: We welcome smaller groups, but we charge a base fee of $90.) Teachers, staff, and one chaperone per 10 students are complimentary.
The Trip lasts 1.5-2 hours, and we welcome groups to bring a picnic lunch or snack for before or after their program at the Farm.
